Motorcycle Track Tire Pressure: A Safe Setup Process

“What pressure should I run?” is incomplete without the tire model, size, motorcycle, load, pace, surface, ambient temperature, whether warmers are used, and whether the number is cold or hot. A copied paddock number can be outside the tire maker's range even when it worked for the rider in the next garage.

The safe process begins with the current technical sheet for the exact tire. Pirelli's published track table, for example, gives different cold and hot ranges by size and assumes a defined warmer temperature and time for many racing tires. Michelin likewise publishes model-specific minimum cold and target hot values. Those tables demonstrate why one front-and-rear pair of numbers cannot cover every tire.

Define the measurement before writing it down

Label every reading as cold ambient, off-warmer, or immediately hot after the session. Also record the time, ambient and track conditions, tire model and compound, size, number of heat cycles, warmer setting and duration, and rider comments. “Rear 25” without context is nearly useless. Use the same gauge all day and compare it periodically with a trusted reference; two gauges can disagree enough to send setup in different directions.

A repeatable morning routine

  1. Inspect both tires, valves, caps, rims, direction arrows, and manufacturing condition.
  2. Confirm the tire maker's current track chart and the tire service vendor's advice.
  3. Set the cold or off-warmer pressure exactly in the condition the chart defines.
  4. Allow the specified warmer time and temperature if warmers are used.
  5. Ride an appropriate warm-up, then measure promptly and consistently after the session.
  6. Change only a small amount at a time, log it, and reassess.

Do not bleed a tire at a random point halfway through a session or after it has cooled for ten minutes and call that the target hot pressure. The measurement condition must be repeatable.

Pressure is not a cure-all

A tire that tears, moves, overheats, or feels vague may be responding to pace, compound choice, suspension, geometry, throttle application, temperature, or a worn carcass—not just PSI. Extremely low pressure creates excessive carcass deformation and heat. Excess pressure can reduce compliance and contact behavior. Stay inside official guidance while diagnosing the whole system with the tire vendor or a qualified suspension technician.

Remember the ride home

Track settings for a race-oriented tire are not automatically appropriate for public-road speed, load, temperature, rain, potholes, or sustained highway use. Michelin specifically directs riders to restore the motorcycle manufacturer's road recommendation after track use for applicable street-legal products. Reinstall valve caps, inspect the tire, and reset road pressures when the motorcycle leaves the circuit.

Bottom line: Start with the exact tire maker's current table, define cold and hot correctly, use one reliable gauge, log conditions, and make small changes. A precise process beats a famous rider's unexplained PSI.
