A 520 conversion changes the pitch family of the chain and both sprockets, typically from a heavier original 525 or 530 setup to 520 components. The attraction is real: a smaller assembly can reduce rotating and unsprung mass, and race-oriented gearing choices are widely available. The improvement is not free horsepower, however. It is a trade among weight, strength rating, service life, maintenance, and intended use.
For a dedicated race or track motorcycle where small reductions matter and the drivetrain is inspected constantly, a properly rated 520 kit can make sense. For a high-mileage street, touring, two-up, or heavily modified high-torque motorcycle, the original pitch is often the better engineering choice.
What must change
The chain, front sprocket, and rear sprocket must all use the same pitch. A 520 chain cannot be combined with 525 sprockets. Width, tooth profile, countershaft fit, rear carrier fit, chain length, clearance, and gearing must be correct for the exact motorcycle. Vortex explicitly cautions that moving to a smaller pitch reduces chain and sprocket life and that the selected chain must be rated for the motorcycle's displacement and power.
What you gain—and what you do not
The benefit is lower drivetrain mass, especially if the conversion also uses an aluminum rear sprocket. The effect is much smaller than changing wheels or tires, and most street riders will not feel a dramatic acceleration change from pitch alone. Gearing changes packaged with some kits can create a much more obvious response, but that response comes from the tooth-count ratio, not simply the word “520.” Shorter gearing may increase indicated error on some motorcycles, raise cruising rpm, and alter wheelbase or chain-adjustment position.
Choose the whole system
- Confirm the manufacturer lists the kit for the exact year and model.
- Check the chain's application and strength rating, not only its pitch and color.
- Decide stock or altered gearing deliberately.
- Use the exact matching rivet link supplied or specified for that chain model.
- Verify clearances around the case, guide, tire, swingarm, and rear sprocket.
- Install with the chain manufacturer's plate-width and rivet-flare specifications.
Master links are not universally interchangeable, even within one brand and pitch. A link that appears to fit can have different pin, plate, or sealing dimensions.
Who should stay with stock pitch
Stay with the original size when durability, low maintenance, highway mileage, luggage, passengers, or long replacement intervals matter more than a modest weight saving. Stock pitch also reduces the chance of ordering an under-rated combination. If you cannot explain why your lap-time or gearing goal needs the conversion, a high-quality chain and sprocket set in the original specification is usually the sensible purchase.
Bottom line: Use a 520 conversion as a complete, model-specific system for a clear weight or gearing objective—not as a cosmetic default. Match all three components, preserve adequate rating, and accept the likely service-life trade.
