Why We Recommend a Clear Windscreen for Track Days

A motorcycle windscreen is not only aerodynamic bodywork. On a sportbike, it can sit directly in the rider's sightline when the rider tucks on a straight or lowers the head under braking. That is why our default track-day recommendation is a clear, optically clean windscreen.

This is a recommendation, not a claim that every organizer bans tint. The downside appears precisely when visibility is already difficult: rain, late-afternoon shadow, an overcast session, a crest, a dirty screen, or a rider trying to find a brake marker through the bubble.

The numbers are more dramatic than the names

Zero Gravity publishes visible-light transparency figures of 93 percent for clear, 10 percent for light smoke, and 5 percent for dark smoke. Light smoke sounds mild, but its published transmission is a small fraction of clear. Add rubber, insects, scratches, moisture, a tinted helmet shield, and curved plastic, and the combined view can deteriorate quickly.

Why the track sightline is different

At road pace, many riders look over a sportbike screen. At track speed, getting behind the bubble reduces wind load and helps the rider stay stable. The eyes may look through its upper area while approaching the fastest braking zone. Elevation makes this more noticeable: at a crest, visible pavement is already narrow. A dark or distorted panel can hide surface changes, reference points, or a slower motorcycle.

Avoid stacking tints

A smoke windscreen plus a smoke helmet shield is the classic poor combination. Either may be comfortable alone in strong sun, but their reductions compound. The setup that works at noon can be unacceptable in a 4:30 p.m. session or under a storm cloud. A clear screen lets the rider select eye protection for current conditions without permanently tinting the motorcycle's sightline too.

What to buy and how to care for it

• Choose clear material with no waves, crazing, deep scratches, or stress distortion.
• Select a useful race or double-bubble height that does not force an unnatural head position.
• Use correct well nuts, spacers, hardware, and torque.
• Confirm no contact with controls through full steering travel.
• Soak bugs before wiping and use only material-safe cleaner and microfiber.

Inspect every mounting hole after transport, bodywork removal, or a crash. Replace a cracked screen rather than drilling the crack or tightening fasteners harder.

Bottom line: A smoked screen is a style choice with a measurable visibility cost. A clear race-height screen preserves aerodynamic function while giving the rider the best view through changing conditions.
